Our Head Office, based in Hertford, serves our managed and tenanted pubs. We trade in a relatively tight geographical area which enables our support functions to provide prompt assistance to pubs. Hertford is also home to our Brewery as well as our Production and Distribution Centre. We are proud to maintain the tradition of in-house dray delivery and cellar services. Chris is responsible for the Production Department looking after the brewery, distribution and cellar service divisions, reporting to our Production and Sales Director. The main focus for Chris is the brewery and, as Head Brewer he is passionate about the quality of McMullen’s fine traditional cask beer. He selects the finest ale malts from East Anglia and English whole leaf hops for the production of all McMullen beers, as well as developing all the recipes for The Whole Hop Brewery’s range of Seasonal Selection ales.
McMullen’s gives Chris the opportunity to brew a traditional beer product with 100% natural ingredients as well as work with a team with a family feel.
In 1989 Chris graduated from Heriot-Watt University with an honours degree in Brewing and Microbiology. During this time he gained some work experience with Guinness at their Park Royal Brewery. Following this, his career at McMullen’s began, working in all the production departments, covering all aspects of the jobs involved in those departments. As McMullen’s started planning the construction of the latest microbrewery in 2004, he assisted in leading the team that designed and built it, to open on time in January 2006.

Ed looks after Chicken & Grill Pubs. Running pubs is easy, the hard part is running them well – says Ed. This can only be achieved with great people who have a passion and belief in the quality of the food and drink served. One of the highlights for Ed within his role is seeing his people develop.
McMullen’s phenomenal training programmes ensure the teams can realise their full potential which is one of the main reasons McMullen’s was Ed’s company of choice.
Ed’s passion for hospitality started at an early age (fifteen) working in his family business. He went on to Cheltenham Catering College, where he spent two years training to be a chef. After several years gaining experience in hotel kitchens, Ed started in the pub trade taking a small tenancy. After five good years and the birth of his daughter, Ed decided to further his career and train with Punch/Spirit Pub Company. For 10 years, Ed enrolled first as General Manager and then moved into the Area Manager role looking after brands such as John Barras and 2-4-1, family dining. Ed joined McMullen’s after a brief spell with Marston’s.

My role is fundamentally about balancing the needs of those that rely on Macs, both in this generation and those in the future. In particular, as an investor employed in the day-to-day activities of the company, I am positioned to balance the demands of labour and capital – the two critical pillars of a successful guest-focused business. The Property, Tenancy, Production, Distribution and Administration functions ultimately report into this side of the Managing Director role.
